A wanted drug dealer was caught by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in the Thane area of Mumbai with 12 kg of Marijuana.
With the drugs hidden under the floor-mat of the car, the smuggling attempt was thwarted by the agency.
Due to the recent increase in the drug cases in Maharashtra, the agencies had been on high alert for the drug dealers, to prevent the smuggling.
In 2017, a total of 63,800 cases were booked under the Act- 41,056 cases for personal consumption and 22,744 cases of trafficking. These were the reports from half a decade ago and with the new technologies and advancement in everything, the drug abuse in India has only risen up.
The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985; is commonly referred to as NDPS Act, is an act of the Parliament of India that prohibits a person from production/manufacture/cultivation/possession/sale/storage/purchase/transport of any narcotics drug or substance.
This Act extends to the whole of India and it is also applied to all Indian citizens outside India and to all persons on ship and aircrafts registered in India.
The punishment may differ from 1 year of imprisonment with ten thousand rupees of fine to 10 years of imprisonment with 1-2 lakh rupees of fine in India, varying in small to large amounts of drug found on the person.
