2022 FIFA World Cup & 2023 AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers: India beat Bangladesh in a must win game

Chhetri’s brace takes him above Lionel Messi in the list of active international goal scorers as India beat Bangladesh 2-0.

Sunil Chhetri’s brace not only helps India clinch a victory against Bangladesh but also takes him (74 goals) above Lionel Messi (72 goals) in the list of active international goal scorers. India defeated Bangladesh 2-0 by scoring two late goals to remain in the qualifying competition for the FIFA World Cup 2022.

India started the game on an extremely high note by putting constant pressure on the Bangladeshi defence. On the other hand, Bangladesh set back and tried to find opportunities on counter attacks.

Although, until the 79th minute, the Bangladeshi defence did a spectacular job to keep the Blue Tigers away from scoring a goal. One such opportunity came in the 35th minute where Chinglensana’s powerful header was cleared by a Bangladeshi defender from the goal line.

Finally, in the 79th minute, Chhetri made a perfectly timed run to head in Ashique’s cross as India found the breakthrough. In the 92nd minute, another goal came off Brandon’s beautiful through pass to Suresh who fired in a hard pass to Chhetri as he placed the ball calmly in the opposition’s goal.

The win seemed to be the first victory for team India since Coach Igor Stimac’s appointment.
