Meta plans launch of Threads web version next week: Report

Meta’s Threads app, which launched in July, is presently available only on iOS and Android smartphones. At this point, there was no web version, which is certainly a necessary part of a social media network, especially one designed to compete with X (previously Twitter). However, The Wall Street Journal reports that Meta’s web version of Threads is set to launch this week.

However, the WSJ adds that Meta’s plans are not “final” and may change. According to The Verge, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri also said last week on Threads that Meta was indeed testing a “early version” internally, but that it still needed “some work before it can be opened up to everyone.”

Furthermore, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has suggested that the web functionality would be accompanied by several of  other features, including a more comprehensive search and that the new features may be released “in the next few weeks.” Given that it has been nearly two weeks since Zuckerberg made this comment, as well as the WSJ’s report, it is likely that Meta might release the web version of Threads soon.

In related news, the Threads platform is losing daily users at an alarming rate. Threads have apparently been losing users at a rapid pace despite becoming the most downloaded non-game app in a decade and surpassing 100 million users. TIME reports that Threads’ numbers have dropped to less than a tenth of X (formerly Twitter).
