Maren Morris is coming for Jason Aldean. The “My Church” singer, 33, seemed to slam Jason, 46, for his controversial song “Try That in a Small Town,” as she took to her Instagram account to tease a new song that she’s seemingly coming out with. Maren’s post on September 7 showed a video of a local village with a small billboard that read, “Welcome To Our Perfect Small Town From Sundown To Sunset.” Maren captioned her Instagram post, “I’m done filling a cup with a hole in the bottom.” She appeared to be shading Jason’s controversial song, which was accused of promoting violence and racism.
In addition to the shady video, Maren posted a photo of her outfit from the 2016 CMA Awards, when she won New Artist of the Year while Jason got no nominations. Brandi Carlile, a friend and fellow country singer, basically confirmed that Maren’s post was meant to slam Jason. “Oh it is ON,” Brandi commented, adding a fire emoji. Jason has yet to comment on Maren’s shady social media post.
Jason grabbed headlines earlier this year for his controversial country song. The original music video for “Try That in a Small Town” was regarded as racist because it was shot in front of Tennessee’s Columbia County courthouse, the site of the horrific lynching of Henry Choate, an 18-year-old Black man, in 1927. The video also featured news clips from the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. Following the huge criticism, Jason issued a statement denying that the song was “pro-lynching,” calling the backlash “meritless” and “dangerous,” however he did not address the shooting location.
