Nicole Kidman was eager to put an end to rumours that she had ruined her co-star Jude Law’s marriage. Kidman is a hugely popular and talented actress and her career has skyrocketed since her divorce from Tom Cruise. The A-lister has produced and appeared in a number of highly praised films and television series.
When she and Jude Law co-starred in Cold Mountain, they had heated on-screen chemistry. Jude Law’s marriage began to fall apart while he was filming the historical romance. When it was hinted that Nicole Kidman and Jude Law had an affair on the set of Cold Mountain, which destroyed Jude Law’s marriage, Kidman hired a lawyer and went to court right away.
Nicole Kidman hired a lawyer right after the allegations
When allegations started circulating that Nicole Kidman and Jude Law were involved on the set of their film, Cold Mountain, the actress decided to put an end to the rumours, even if it meant legal action. Kidman filed a libel suit against the Sun and the Daily Mail, among others.
Keith Schilling, The Hours actress’s solicitor, spoke about what had been published in the Sun. “He said the article was “meant and was understood to mean that the claimant (Ms. Kidman) had had an adulterous affair with Jude Law, who was at the time married with young children”.
He added, “The article implied that the claimant had led Jude Law to cheat on his wife Sadie Frost, and by her behavior caused the breakdown of their marriage.”
Schilling argued, “The publication of the article caused considerable damage to the claimant’s (Nicole Kidman) personal and professional reputation and she has suffered considerable embarrassment and distress.
Gideon Benaim, Kidman’s lawyer in her claim against the Daily Mail, made a similar point in court. He added, “Her embarrassment was particularly acute as the allegations coincided with the run-up to the Oscars award ceremony in Los Angeles in which she had been nominated for an award for best actress.”
Kidman won her lawsuits, proving that the accusations were false and she no longer had to answer questions about herself or her former co-star.
The publication “also agreed to publish an apology, as well as pay the claimant a sum in damages and her legal costs, and agreed not to repeat the allegations complained of.”
