Following the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ march in Kolkata on Tuesday to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a video of an old man braving the police’s water cannons has gone viral.
In the footage, which was also uploaded by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, the man in a saffron-colored attire can be seen standing undeterred and confronting the water cannons deployed by the Kolkata Police to disperse the protesters. The individual also continued to wave the national flag in his hand.
In response to the video, BJP leader Locket Chatterjee stated that the man in the tape is “defining his steadfast determination” against the West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee.
During the event, police clashed with protesters in various locations of Kolkata and Howrah as they attempted to break barricades and march towards the West Bengal secretariat. The police used tear gas and lathi charges to disperse BJP leaders and supporters marching towards the Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar.Meanwhile, police arrested more than 200 people in connection with the event.
