President Droupadi Murmu stated she was “dismayed and horrified” by the tragedy and urged the nation to recognise the “perversion” of crimes against women in her initial response to the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata on Wednesday.
“Those who share such views then go further and see the female as an object… We owe it to our daughters to remove the hurdles from their path of winning the freedom from fear,” the President told news agency PTI.
The President went on to say that no civilised society could tolerate such atrocities against daughters and sisters. “The nation is bound to be outraged, and so am I,” she said in her statement. The President’s article titled “Women’s Safety: Enough is Enough” was given to PTI during protests over the event at the Kolkata hospital. While students, physicians, and citizens protested in Kolkata, criminals remained on the prowl elsewhere. Murmu added that the casualties included kindergarten girls.
The President added that plans and strategies were subsequently developed by an outraged nation, and the measures did have some impact. Numerous catastrophes of a similar kind have occurred in the 12 years afterward, but only a small number have garnered national attention, according to Murmu. The President stated, “Women have to fight for every inch of ground they have won,” in reference to their rights in the nation. According to Murmu, social prejudices and certain norms and practices have always been against the advancement of women’s rights.
The President claims that the reason behind crimes against women is the objectification of women by a select minority. The president emphasised that combating this mentality is a responsibility for both the State and society, saying, “It is ingrained deeply in the minds of such people.”
