History of Teachers’ Day
Teachers’ Day celebrates the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s first Vice President and second President. He was an excellent philosopher and scholar. He received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1954 and honorary membership in the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, in Madras Presidency. Dr. Radhakrishnan, a renowned teacher, taught at prestigious universities such as the University of Calcutta and Oxford University. He was also an accomplished writer who promoted international understanding through his talks in the United States and Europe.
When Dr. Radhakrishnan became President of India in 1962, a few students paid him a visit and requested that he celebrate his birthday on September 5. However, he urged that the pupils dedicate the day to their professors. Thus, September 5 became known as Teachers’ Day in India.
Celebrations of Teachers’ Day
Teachers’ Day is celebrated in all educational institutions around India. Students pay respect to their teachers by givng speeches, playing music, and other cultural activities. In schools, students also give their teachers presents mostly red pens, greeting cards, and roses as signs of appreciation and respect.
