A child in Class XI at Prafulla Nagar in Belgharia, on the northern outskirts of the city, repeatedly stabbed an 11-year-old girl on Wednesday afternoon, according to police. A senior officer of the Barracpore Commissionerate said that the kid approached the girl and her mother as they were on their way home from school. The girl was a Class IX student at a school in Baranagar.
The girl and the teenager got into a small conflict, the officer said, and then the boy pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed the girl. The youngster was waiting within a tunnel beneath Nivedita Setu, according to the police, and he was aware of the everyday path the girl and her mother used to get home from school.
“After the boy approached the mother and the daughter, the girl refused to speak to him. The boy the took out a knife and started stabbing her. When the girl’s mother tried to protect her the boy lunged at her as well,” the officer said.
Residents and passersby raced to the mom and girl’s aid after hearing their cries. The officer said, “They were able to stop the boy and take away his knife.” The group then began to thrash the boy. A team from the Barrackpore Commissionerate had to come to his aid after locals informed them to the situation. After that, the mother and daughter were brought to a neighbouring hospital. They were later moved to a hospital owned by a private company off of EM Bypass.
“The mother was discharged after treatment but the girl has been admitted and is scheduled to undergo surgery. She has been stabbed multiple times in the stomach and chest. Her hands too have stab wounds. She needed stitches,” said an official of the hospital.
Later, in protest over the event, a group of Prafulla Nagar residents stopped the Belgharia Expressway’s Dakshineswar-bound edge for around half an hour. Vehicles crawled on Jessore Road as a result of the disruption to traffic moving out of the city, and the impact was also felt on the side of the VIP Road that leads to the airport. According to a traffic wing official of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate, Wednesday afternoon traffic on the flank heading towards the airport had significantly slowed.
