Fire breaks out at Kamala Mills in Mumbai

A large fire at the 15-story Times Tower in the Kamala Mills site in Lower Parel was extinguished after four hours of vigorous firefighting. The fire broke out around 6:30 a.m., and the fire department responded promptly, sending eight engines and other firefighting equipment to the scene.

Authorities reported there were no injuries, however the fire was labelled a category 2 (major) emergency. According to civic officials, the fire started in the building’s electrical conduit and spread to the third and seventh levels. “Five fire engines and seven jumbo tankers were pressed into operation to contain the fire,” the officials said.

This is the third fire at Kamala Mills in five years, triggering criticism from local politicians. MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande criticised the lack of fire checks and widespread unlawful development in the area. “There are no fire audits, and illegal construction continues unchecked with the support of local MLAs,” Deshpande told .

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and will look into any potential safety violations in the structure. Kamala Mills, a major business hub, has seen multiple high-profile fires, raising worries about the area’s safety laws and fire preparedness.
