Court expressed concern with the absence of the CBI’s investigating officer and the 40-minute delay in the appearance of the CBI’s counsel during the hearing on Sanjay Roy’s bail application. Roy, a civic volunteer, is accused of raping and killing a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The delay prompted the Sealdah court to query whether the main culprit should be given bail, reflecting what the magistrate termed as the CBI’s “lethargic attitude”.
The case, transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court, has faced public scrutiny. Trinamool Congress, under fire for its handling of the incident, alleged attempts to sabotage justice. The party criticized both the CBI and the BJP, questioning why accountability is not being demanded.
After waiting for the CBI’s counsel, the magistrate remarked on the agency’s lack of professionalism before ordering Roy to judicial detention for 14 days. The CBI’s delayed response permitted the defence to raise more issues about how the matter was handled.
Trinamool Congress reacted strongly, accusing the CBI of neglect and lack of seriousness. In a series of social media posts on X, the party condemned the absence of the CBI officers and questioned the silence of the BJP and CPM. One post called the absence “a blatant disregard for justice” and criticized the agency for “sabotaging justice.” The party demanded immediate action from the CBI and urged the BJP to take a stand on the issue, stating that the entire country is waiting for answers.
