West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to convene an emergency cabinet meeting on Sunday, amid growing public demand for Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal’s resignation. The action is in response to widespread protests over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The call for Goyal’s resignation has grown as citizens criticise the police’s handling of the case, with many seeking responsibility from high-ranking officials. Governor Bose’s call for an immediate meeting emphasises the urgency of the situation and the growing public fury at the police leadership.
The Supreme Court is slated to hear the case on Monday, September 9, which adds to its complexity. A bench chaired by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, together with Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will monitor the proceedings, which the court launched on its own.
Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has accused the West Bengal government of “unpardonable” non-cooperation in providing assistance to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is in charge of securing the facility.
As tensions between the national and state governments escalate, the state administration faces additional pressure. Governor Bose’s intervention underlines the growing call for accountability, as public and political pressure increases on both the police and the state administration.
