On Friday, a Kolkata court denied the CBI’s request to do a narcoanalysis test on Sanjay Roy, the detained suspect in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case.
According to people close to the case, Roy declined to sign off on the test in court. In order to obtain authorisation to test Roy, the CBI filed an appeal with the Sealdah court located in the city. Using the 2010 Karnataka High Court ruling as support, the court declared that the accused’s consent is required for the test.
Sources claim that Roy first consented for the narco test in front of the CBI investigation team but declined in front of the magistrate. The narco-analysis test will assist the investigation team in confirming the accused’s version of events, an officer had previously told PTI. According to the CBI official, the substance sodium pentothal is used into the subject’s body during a narco analysis test, putting him into a hypnotic condition and neutralising his imagination.
Roy had already undergone a polygraph examination at the Presidency Correctional Home by the CBI. It’s already been a month since the doctor’s death was discovered on August 9. Protesters including doctors, have called for “Reclaim the Night” twice, i.e., on August 14 and September 8. More protests are still taking place.
