In the aftermath of the arrest of Abhijit Mondal, former Officer-in-Charge (O/C) of Tala Police Station, for his alleged involvement in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, Malay Kumar Dutta has been appointed as the new O/C of the station. The appointment was confirmed through an official order issued by the Commissioner of Kolkata Police on Thursday.
“Malay Kumar Dutta, Inspector of Police (I-Cadre), Addl. O/C, Shyampukur PS, North Division, Kolkata Police, presently looking after the work of the office of the O/C, Tala PS, North Division, Kolkata Police, in addition to his own duties, is posted as Officer-in-Charge, Tala PS, North Division, Kolkata Police, with immediate effect in the interest of public service,” the order stated.
This change in leadership follows the legal proceedings against Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College. Both were transferred to the Presidency Jail on Wednesday after appearing in the Sealdah Court. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the two in connection with the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the medical college, an incident that has shocked the community.
In a related move earlier this week, the West Bengal Medical Council canceled Sandip Ghosh’s registration as a medical practitioner. Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched a search operation at Ghosh’s residence in Chinar Park, Kolkata, as part of an investigation into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. The ED’s case, filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), focuses on suspected money laundering linked to Ghosh’s tenure at the institution. This high-profile case continues to unfold, drawing significant public attention.
