Junior Doctors at Sagar Dutta Medical College Go on Strike Following Assault by Patient’s Relatives

Junior doctors at the state-run Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital initiated a strike on Friday night following an alleged assault by the relatives of a deceased patient. The patient, a middle-aged woman suffering from severe respiratory issues, was admitted in critical condition but could not be saved. After her death, a group of about 20 individuals, reportedly angered over the loss, stormed the hospital and attacked doctors and nurses on duty.

According to a junior doctor, the attackers accused the medical staff of negligence. “We have repeatedly requested increased security in both the outpatient department and wards, but this incident shows the administration’s failure to protect us,” said the doctor. Six individuals, including nurses, sustained injuries in the assault, with a policeman also injured while attempting to deescalate the situation.

The patient’s family alleged that the woman had dengue, but despite efforts to save her, she passed away. Hospital authorities have denied any medical negligence, claiming that all possible measures were taken to treat the patient.

In the wake of the incident, the hospital has filed a police complaint. A senior official from the Barrackpore police commissionerate confirmed an investigation is underway. To prevent further incidents, security at the hospital has been increased, and a police patrol has been deployed at the main gate. Junior doctors have stated they will continue their protest until their demands for adequate security are met.
