The Surajpur Police in north Chhattisgarh’s Sarguja district are intensifying their search for Kuldeep Sahu, a notorious habitual offender, who allegedly carried out a series of violent crimes on Sunday night. Sahu is accused of first attacking an on-duty constable, Ghanshyam Sonwani, by pouring boiling oil on him in a busy market area. Sonwani sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital.
As police searched for Sahu, the situation escalated when he reportedly ransacked the house of a head constable and abducted his wife and minor daughter. Hours later, the bodies of the two victims were found on the highway near Pidha village, about 4 km from Surajpur.
Surajpur SP MR Ahire described the crime as unprecedented in its brutality, stating, “We immediately launched a search operation, setting up roadblocks and coordinating with teams from nearby districts.” Police tracked down Sahu’s vehicle but discovered it blood-stained and abandoned.
Tensions flared in the community, leading to protests outside Sahu’s residence, where angry mobs set vehicles on fire. Sahu, who has multiple criminal cases against him, is now facing charges of murder and attempted murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The police vow to bring Sahu to justice and have expanded their search to locate his relatives, who have also gone missing. “This attack on law enforcement will not go unpunished,” Ahire warned. The investigation remains ongoing.
