As Cyclone ‘Dana’ approaches the Odisha coast, the state braces for widespread disruption and evacuations. With over 10 lakh people expected to be relocated from 14 districts, the Odisha government has set up more than 5,000 relief centers to accommodate those at risk. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the cyclone will make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port early on Friday.
In response to the looming threat, Eastern and South Eastern Railways have cancelled over 150 express and passenger trains scheduled for October 23 to 25. This decision aims to minimize risks as the severe cyclonic storm, with wind speeds projected to reach 120 km/h, approaches the coastline.
Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, has urged local officials and MLAs to coordinate with authorities to ensure smooth rescue and relief operations. Plans are also underway to restore power, water supply, and communication lines promptly after the storm. Hospitals are being prioritized for uninterrupted electricity.
Fishermen have been warned to stay ashore as dangerous winds are expected to intensify by October 24. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has stationed 13 teams in vulnerable areas, while Indian Air Force aircraft have already transported personnel and supplies to Bhubaneswar.
