Cyclone Dana Update: More than 5 lakh people evacuated in West Bengal and Odisha; Helpline numbers given

As the powerful cyclonic storm Dana is expected to hit land just after midnight on Thursday, October 24, 2024, thousands of residents in West Bengal and Odisha’s coastal districts—particularly Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore—are preparing for a terrifying night. It is anticipated that the landfall process will last until Friday AM.

The outer layer of the cyclonic storm had encircled the coastal region of Odisha six hours before the impact, resulting in widespread wind and rain on Thursday night. While emergency response teams carefully walked to clear roadblocks, trees were uprooted and remote areas in the districts of Bhadrak and Kendrapara experienced damage to their electricity infrastructure.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi was contacted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to get an update on the state’s readiness for Cyclone Dana. The Prime Minister and the Home Minister both expressed satisfaction with Odisha’s preparedness to deal with the storm, according to the Chief Minister’s Office.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the storm was 70 km east-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 90 km south-southeast of Dhamara (Odisha), and 190 km south-southwest of Sagar Island (West Bengal) as of 8.30 p.m. IST on Thursday, October 24, 2024. The storm is expected to land between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port either late Thursday evening (October 24, 2024) or early Friday morning (October 25, 2024), according to the IMD’s projection.
