Cyclone Dana: one person dead in West Bengal, and other updates

One person perished in West Bengal, as authorities in Kolkata remained on high alert following the landfall of’severe’ Cyclone Dana on the Odisha coast. The streets were inundated, and water penetrated the government-run SSKM Hospital and Kolkata Municipal Corporation headquarters on Esplanade.

While Odisha reported no injuries, flooding occurred in the coastal districts of Bhadrak, Kendrapara, and Balasore. According to IMD DG Mrutunjay Mohapatra, the system will remain in place while the severe cyclonic storm weakens and moves deeper into the state on Friday, causing heavy rainfall in most areas.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi claims that because of careful preparation and execution, there were no fatalities following the arrival of Cyclone Dana. “There has been no report of any casualty anywhere,” Mr. Majhi told the journalists. Because of our careful preparation and execution, we have reached our goal of zero casualties. We have relocated over six lakh people to safer locations. Airport service is now commonplace.

By 1 pm today, all roadblocks will be removed, and the state’s first flight touched down at 9 am. Following Cyclone Dana’s landfall, which had little effect on the state thus far, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Friday that emergency administrative operations would continue in the two coastal districts of East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas, according to news agency IANS. “In every area that is under risk, the emergency administrative operations will go on.”

However, the Chief Minister stated that South 24 Parganas area and East Midnapore would receive particular attention. In a previous meeting with the state’s senior administrative authorities, the chief minister recommended that mosquito nets be distributed right once in areas where mosquito-borne illnesses like malaria are common.
