Delhi’s Air Pollution: Toxic air is equals to smoking 49 cigarettes a day

Delhi’s worsening air quality is similar to the quantity of cigarettes an individual could smoke or inhale each day. An individual could inhale 49.02 cigarettes per day in the nation’s capital, which has the lowest air quality index (AQI) at 978.

Delhi’s air quality has been poor since the end of October and has become worse every day. This is due to a number of things, such as firecrackers and burning stubble.

As of 12:30 pm on November 18, the national capital’s air quality index (AQI), as reported by aqi.in, was 978. In a 24-hour period, this equates to smoking 49.02 cigarettes daily. Despite the concerning increase in pollution levels in the nation’s capital, the AAP-led state government was also chastised by the Supreme Court for its tardiness in implementing Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Even if the AQI falls below 450, a bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Augustine George Masih of the Supreme Court said it would not allow any reduction in preventive measures under stage 4 of GRAP. Notably, schools have chosen to hold courses offline due to the worsening pollution levels, with the exception of grades 10 and 12.
