Specially-Abled Girl Takes Charge as UNICEF West Bengal Chief for a Day

Riya Sardar, a specially-abled Class IX student from Vidyanagar village in South 24 Parganas, symbolically assumed the role of UNICEF chief for West Bengal on World Children’s Day. This initiative was part of UNICEF’s “Kids’ Takeover” programme, aimed at empowering children to voice their concerns.

Riya, who uses a wheelchair due to difficulty walking, called for the inclusion of children’s perspectives in policymaking. As the day’s UNICEF chief, she proposed an annual meeting where children could present their views on developmental plans. “No physically challenged child should face barriers in schools or public places,” said Riya, sharing her personal experiences. She credited her school for accommodating her needs by constructing a ramp and relocating classes to the ground floor.

UNICEF officials pledged to incorporate Riya’s suggestions into their “Listen to the Future” initiative, ensuring children’s participation in decision-making.

In another Kids’ Takeover programme in Berhampore, Soumiki Chakraborty, a Class XII student, assumed the role of editor for a community-based TV channel. She advocated for broadcasting at least one news item monthly addressing children’s issues in Murshidabad. These initiatives highlight the importance of empowering children and amplifying their voices to influence change.
