Tamil Nadu rains: IMD warns, schools shut down tomorrow; 7 NDRF teams sent

On Tuesday, several areas of Tamil Nadu and its adjacent regions experienced heavy rain. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Bay of Bengal depression has deepened and is expected to intensify further on Wednesday, November 27, into a cyclonic storm.

The southern state’s unrelenting rains caused waterlogging and traffic jams in a number of places, including the OMR Road. Several locations had significant rainfall on Tuesday, including Chennai and the neighbouring areas of Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, and the Cauvery delta, including Nagapattinam.

Aavin, a state-run dairy supplier, stated that it has taken all required measures to guarantee an uninterrupted supply of milk to the public despite all of the weather warnings, according to PTI. Additionally, it declared that eight of its Aavin parlours in Chennai would continue to operate around the clock.

The IMD report states that on Tuesday, a depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal moved northwest and deepened into a depression. “It is likely to continue to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a cyclonic storm on November 27,” it stated.

Furthermore, on November 26, the weather office issued a red alert for Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu. On Tuesday, isolated locations in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, and Puducherry are expected to see heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

Chennai is under a yellow warning from November 27 to 29 after IMD issued a red alert for two districts on November 27. Orange alerts are in effect until November 30 in other nearby districts as well.
