Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been named captain of Bangladesh for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies, continuing in the role during Najmul Hossain Shanto’s absence due to a groin strain. Mehidy had earlier taken over leadership duties for the ongoing Test series in the Caribbean, which the hosts currently lead 1-0.
The series will see several notable absences for Bangladesh. Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan continues to remain out of the squad, with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed stating that Shakib is “not in a mental state to play for the country.” Shakib has not represented Bangladesh since the Test series against India and was recently part of the Abu Dhabi T10 League.
Other absentees include Towhid Hridoy, who is sidelined with a groin injury sustained during a football match, and Mushfiqur Rahim, who is recovering from a finger injury. Mustafizur Rahman has opted out of the series for personal reasons, while Zakir Hasan has been dropped from the squad.
The ODI squad sees the return of Litton Das, who missed the recent Afghanistan series, along with the inclusion of Parvez Hossain Emon, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Hasan Mahmud, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib.
Shakib’s absence continues to raise questions, with the BCB president acknowledging his need for preparation and team integration. “Playing for a franchise and playing for the country are not the same. Shakib needs to gel with the team and prepare himself for the national setup. Until then, the decision remains in his hands,” Ahmed stated.
The three ODIs are scheduled to take place in St. Kitts on December 8, 10, and 12. Players selected for the ODI squad will depart Dhaka on Monday to join the rest of the team in the Caribbean.
