Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resigns as political crisis intensifies

Amid the political crisis in European nation, Italian PM Giuseppe Conte resigned on January 26th as he failed to secure enough backing in Senate. He handed over his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella in a bid to find more stable government with the new coalition.

Italian PM was working to steer support among the independent lawmakers since Renzi, former PM suspended support for Conte and resigned two Italia Viva ministers. Italy was the first European country to face the full force of the Covid-19 pandemic and has since suffered badly. The economy plunged into recession and deaths are still rising by around 400 a day. The country is struggling to vaccinate its population and rekindle the economic growth.

“The consultations with the parties will start in the afternoon of tomorrow, January 27th”, Ugo Zampetti, secretary of the presidency of the republic said.
