Prince William’s upcoming Christmas plans seem to be filled with both anticipation and uncertainty, especially given the extended family dynamics that will unfold during the holiday. While discussing his preparations for Christmas, the Prince of Wales admitted to being unready for the massive family gathering, which will include 45 members of the royal family. The gathering will be held in Norfolk, where the Royals traditionally celebrate the holiday, and will include the annual Christmas Walk to St. Mary Magdalene Church for the morning service, followed by interactions with royal fans.
This year, however, there’s a notable addition to the royal Christmas gathering. Queen Camilla’s children from her first marriage, Tom Parker Bowles and Laura Lopes, and their families, will be joining the Royals at Sandringham. Tom Parker Bowles, a food writer, revealed that his mother, Camilla, invited him due to a recent health scare and her desire to spend time with him after years without a Christmas together. He expressed gratitude for the invite but also hinted at the complexities of the situation, particularly concerning Prince William’s reported dislike of Bowles.
The tension between Prince William and Tom Parker Bowles has long been rumored, with reports suggesting that William gave his father an ultimatum in the past, stating he wouldn’t attend Christmas if Bowles was present. This tension likely stems from William’s disapproval of Bowles’ lifestyle, which he has reportedly found off-putting. However, with the inclusion of other family members, such as Prince Andrew—who has brought scandal to the family—William may have to put aside his personal feelings to support his father’s desire for a united family gathering.
While the royal family’s Christmas celebrations will be a significant event for those involved, there is one notable absence: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The couple did not receive an invitation to join the festivities at Sandringham, and it’s unlikely they would have attended anyway, given their ongoing concerns about security in the U.K.
It remains to be seen whether Prince William will fully embrace the extended family gathering, or if he will maintain his distance from those with whom he has a complicated relationship.
