Nicole Kidman was visibly emotional as she accepted the International Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, where she was presented with the honor by Jamie Lee Curtis. During her speech, Kidman dedicated the award to her late mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, who passed away in September 2024.
As she thanked Babygirl filmmaker Halina Reijn for casting her in the movie, Kidman opened up about still grieving her mother’s death. Tears welled in her eyes as she shared that she had been unable to dedicate her accolade to her mom during the Venice Film Festival in 2024, but was finally able to do so at this event. “Thank you for giving me the chance to say, ‘This is for my mom,’” she said, prompting cheers from the audience. She went on to express that her entire career had been for both her mother and father, who are no longer with her, and promised to continue working and giving to the world because of her passion for acting.
Kidman briefly apologized for crying, explaining that it was because she could feel her mom’s presence with her in the moment. Her heartfelt words moved the crowd and reflected the deep loss she continues to navigate.
In September 2024, Kidman had to miss screenings of Babygirl at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals to be with her family following her mother’s passing. Kidman and her sister, Antonia, expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans during such a difficult time, especially for respecting their need for privacy.
In her personal and professional life, Kidman has been busy, recently working alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in the upcoming Prime Video series Scarpetta, where they will play sisters. The series, based on Patricia Cornwell’s novels, will also feature the pair as executive producers.
Babygirl, the erotic thriller that earned Kidman the International Star Award, also stars Harris Dickinson and Antonio Banderas. The film is currently in theaters, and Kidman’s performance has earned her a Golden Globe nomination. The Golden Globe ceremony is set for Sunday, January 5.
