Peter Sarsgaard opened up about his approach to choosing new projects and why it feels like a small sacrifice every time

Peter Sarsgaard recently shared insights into how he balances his career and family life. While promoting his new film September 5, he opened up about the “sacrifices” involved in choosing work projects. Sarsgaard explained that, in the past, he might have thought he could work more, but he realized that approach wouldn’t lead to the kind of work he’d be proud of. He now prioritizes his family life, recognizing that every project he takes on involves a personal sacrifice, though he acknowledges it’s not a huge one compared to larger global issues.

The actor, who’s married to Maggie Gyllenhaal, shared that their family is a significant factor in his decision-making process when it comes to work. The couple, who met in 2001 and married in 2009, have two daughters, Ramona (18) and Gloria Ray (13). Sarsgaard jokingly noted that being married to someone with a more consistent job would have been difficult, highlighting their unique dynamic.

In terms of his latest project, September 5, Sarsgaard portrays Roone Arledge, the late ABC News executive, in a film that recounts the tragic Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics. The movie, directed by Tim Fehlbaum, looks at the events from the perspective of the ABC Sports broadcast team covering the hostage situation. Sarsgaard expressed his commitment to making the project the best it can be, as the story is both emotional and important.

September 5 is set to be released in theaters on January 9.
