Sebastian Stan recently shared some exciting insights about Thunderbolts, the upcoming anti-hero ensemble film from Marvel, highlighting how this project stands out from other MCU films. During his appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the actor, known for his role as Bucky Barnes, spoke about how Thunderbolts will be different, describing the team of characters as being “in their own league.”
Seth Meyers, playfully noting how tight-lipped Marvel stars are about upcoming projects, teased Stan about the secretive nature of the MCU, saying, “I know the biggest waste of time is when a person like me asks somebody in a Marvel movie about what’s coming.” Stan responded by describing the Thunderbolts team as a group that feels very separate, almost like they’re on a different “island.”
The cast for Thunderbolts is star-studded, featuring actors like David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Florence Pugh, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, all of whom Stan praised for their incredible talent and humor. “Some of the funniest people—Wyatt Russell and David Harbour are some of the funniest people. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is amazing… Florence Pugh is great too,” he said, expressing his excitement for how the audience will react to the movie. He also hinted that it would be a “nice treat” for Marvel fans.
Stan reflected on his journey with Marvel, acknowledging how much he’s grown as an actor since first stepping into the role of Bucky Barnes in 2011. He credited his success to the support of his Marvel family, saying, “I’ve grown up with Marvel, you know, essentially. I grew as an actor and with this character. It’s like I have, you know, a brother in a way, a family member, that I see for Thanksgiving every year. That’s how it feels.”
Looking back on his career, which includes roles in I, Tonya, The Apprentice, A Different Man, Pam & Tommy, and more, Stan expressed his gratitude, adding that the encouragement from his Marvel peers has been key to his willingness to take on bold roles. “They’re so supportive. And I think if I didn’t have them, honestly, I don’t know if I would have taken these chances,” he said.
Stan will reprise his role as Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) in Thunderbolts, which is set to hit theaters in May 2025, alongside Florence Pugh’s Black Widow and other Marvel favorites.
