Lily Allen Reveals Why She ‘Harbored Resentment’ For Former Mentor Sir Elton John

Lily Allen recently reflected on her past relationship with Elton John, admitting that she had held resentment against him for years following their falling out. The two had been close friends and collaborators, with John managing Allen for several years. However, as their professional and personal relationship deteriorated, Allen felt hurt and wrote a vulnerable letter to John, opening up about her struggles with sobriety and how his absence left a “big Elton-shaped hole” in her life. When John didn’t respond to the letter, Allen held onto resentment for a while, feeling hurt by his lack of acknowledgment.

In an episode of her Miss Me? podcast, she explained how she had been upset by his silence, describing it as “mean.” But after moving to America, Allen realized she had never sent the letters to John, which led her to feel guilty. In a reflective Instagram post shared on December 31, she addressed her past feelings, telling her podcast co-host Miquita Oliver, “Elton, if you’re listening, which you’re probably not, I love you, and I no longer harbor that resentment towards you.”

Despite their rocky moments, including a memorable public argument at the 2008 GQ Men of the Year Awards, where Allen got upset after John questioned her drinking, their relationship appears to have healed. In the heat of the moment, Allen famously snapped at John, saying, “F** off, Elton. I am 40 years younger than you and have my whole life ahead of me!”* But now, Allen seems to have moved past those conflicts and is grateful for the support John once provided her.
