5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Assam’s Morigaon, Tremors Felt in Guwahati

Early on Thursday morning, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Assam’s Morigaon district, sending shockwaves through Guwahati and other regions of the state.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred 16 km below the surface at 2:25 a.m. The NCS also reportd on X, “EQ of M: 5.0, On: 27/02/2025 02:25:40 IST, Lat: 26.28 N, Long: 92.24 E, Depth: 16 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam.”

Assam is located in one of the most seismically active regions of India, hence earthquakes are rather common there. Seismic Zone V places it at high risk of experiencing powerful tremors. Massive earthquakes have occurred in the area over the years, including the 1800 Shillong earthquake (8.1 magnitude) and the 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake (8.6 magnitude), both of which rank among the strongest in recorded history.

Days have passed since a magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook the Bay of Bengal, sending shockwaves over Kolkata and sections of West Bengal. According to the NCS, the earthquake happened on February 25 at 6:10 a.m. The earthquake was registered close to Puri in Odisha, an official from the India Meteorological Department informed news agency PTI.

According to the official, the quake struck the Bay of Bengal at a depth of 91 kilometres. He noted that the tremor was detected near latitude 19.52 N and longitude 88.55 E. There have been no initial reports of damage or injuries, despite the fact that the earthquake tremors briefly alarmed Kolkata residents.
