The first trailer for The Last Anniversary, an upcoming dramedy based on Liane Moriarty’s novel, has officially dropped. Starring Teresa Palmer as Sophie Honeywell, the series follows a woman who unexpectedly inherits a house on the enigmatic Scribbly Gum Island, only to find herself entangled in its deep-rooted secrets.
What to Expect from the Series
Set to premiere on Australian streaming platform Binge on March 27, the show blends humor, mystery, and heartfelt drama. The star-studded cast includes Miranda Richardson, Danielle Macdonald, Helen Thomas, and Susan Prior, bringing Moriarty’s story to life with a mix of wit and emotional depth.
The project reunites Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers producers Nicole Kidman, Per Saari, and Bruna Papandrea, promising the same gripping storytelling and stunning visuals.
A Glimpse into the Trailer
The trailer introduces Sophie (Palmer), who receives an unexpected message from her ex-boyfriend’s great-aunt Connie:
“My family will behave like vultures when they realize I’ve left my all to a relative stranger, but I need someone joyful in my house.”
Upon arriving at Scribbly Gum Island, Sophie is met with suspicion and hostility from its residents. As she attempts to settle into her new home, she slowly begins to uncover the island’s long-held secrets.
A standout scene features a witty exchange at a dinner table, where Danielle Macdonald’s character playfully mocks Sophie’s investigative streak:
“Forty-year-old Nancy Drew right here,” Macdonald quips.
“Thirty-nine,” Palmer corrects.
“And-a-half?” Macdonald teases.
Behind the Scenes
The series is written by Samantha Strauss and directed by John Polson, with production handled by Blossom Films (Kidman and Saari), Made Up Stories (Papandrea), and Fifth Season. Additional executive producers include Jodi Matterson, Steve Hutensky, Casey Haver, Strauss, Polson, and Moriarty herself.
Filming took place in Sydney and the Hawkesbury River, embracing the novel’s rich Australian setting. Notably, this marks the first Moriarty adaptation set in Australia, adding a distinctively local flavor to the production.
