Was Malcolm in the Middle Revival Supposed to Be a Film?

The revival of Malcolm in the Middle is taking an unexpected format—rather than a full series, it was initially pitched as a two-hour movie, according to Frankie Muniz, who played the titular character. In an interview with ScreenRant, Muniz revealed that the revival is now planned as four 30-minute episodes, all tied together as one cohesive storyline. The show will explore where the characters have been and what they’ve been up to since the original series ended. Muniz teased that it will end on a “great note,” but left the door open for more in the future.

Interestingly, Muniz shared that he doesn’t have the fondest view of his own character, Malcolm. In an interview with People, he explained that he realized eight years ago, while watching the show with his wife Paige, that he was very much like his character. His wife remarked, “You weren’t acting at all. You are literally Malcolm,” which led Muniz to admit that he didn’t think much of his character. “Malcolm sucked,” he said, joking that it was a bit difficult to hear. Despite this, Muniz expressed that he’s “obviously thrilled” about the show’s revival and looks forward to reconnecting with the cast on set.

The four-episode revival of Malcolm in the Middle was officially announced in December 2024 and will be available on Disney+. Fans of the show are eagerly anticipating seeing what has become of the quirky family, and Muniz seems just as excited to share the experience with viewers.
