HBO is preparing to bring back its iconic crime drama series True Detective for its highly anticipated fifth season. Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, spoke with Deadline at The White Lotus Season 3 premiere, revealing some exciting details about the upcoming season. The action will shift to New York, specifically Jamaica Bay, offering a fresh setting compared to the Alaskan backdrop of the fourth season.
Orsi teased that this new environment will provide a different atmosphere but promises to be just as intense and gripping. Issa López, the writer and showrunner of the season, has a lot of material to explore, hinting at a deep and complex storyline ahead.
Production is currently gearing up, with filming set to begin in the coming months. The True Detective franchise had been on a hiatus after its third season in 2019, partially due to the pandemic, but it made a strong return with Season 4, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. The fourth season became a massive success, attracting more viewers than the first season and earning 19 Emmy nominations. Jodie Foster even won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
Orsi expressed her excitement about returning to the franchise, revealing that she and López have already worked on the first two episodes of the upcoming season. The casting process is underway, and Orsi is eager to get started, emphasizing that it’s all about assembling the right cast and getting everything prepared for production.
Fans of the series can expect another gripping season that will delve into the intricate police investigations True Detective is known for, uncovering both professional and personal secrets along the way.
