Anupam Kher reflects on Bollywood’s past and Shah Rukh Khan’s enduring stardom

Anupam Kher recalls Shah Rukh Khan’s remark on being the last superstar while promoting his upcoming film Tanvi The Great

Veteran actor Anupam Kher recently looked back on the earlier days of Bollywood, reflecting on a time when genuine relationships defined the industry. In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Kher spoke about the warmth and camaraderie that existed before the era of mobile phones and vanity vans. According to him, the film world once thrived on real human connections rather than convenience and image.

During the discussion, Anupam shared a moment from his past talk show where Shah Rukh Khan had remarked that he considered himself the last superstar. Kher said he agreed with that statement, noting how deeply it reflected the shifting dynamics of stardom in modern cinema.

He also acknowledged the enduring appeal of actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, and Shah Rukh Khan, calling their stardom timeless. In particular, he described Amitabh Bachchan as a symbol of resilience, someone who overcame difficult times and remained a towering figure in Indian cinema.

Anupam Kher is currently promoting his upcoming directorial venture Tanvi The Great, which is set for a worldwide theatrical release on 18 July. The film features a diverse cast including Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Boman Irani, Pallavi Joshi, Karan Tacker, Nasser, and Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen. The production also brings together the creative talents of Oscar winners M M Keeravani and Resul Pookutty, with cinematography by Keiko Nakahara. The film is produced by Anupam Kher Studios in association with NFDC.
