On Friday, September 12, President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Vice President-elect CP Radhakrishnan at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Officials told PTI that the swearing-in ceremony is set around 10 a.m.
The 68-year-old former Maharashtra governor Radhakrishnan defeated former Supreme Court justice B Sudershan Reddy, the joint opposition nominee, by a margin of 152 votes on Tuesday to become India’s 15th vice president. Although 427 MPs were guaranteed to support the NDA, 11 YSRCP members also backed Radhakrishnan, giving him 14 more votes than anticipated and igniting rumors of opposition cross-voting, according to news agency ANI.
Thirteen MPs, including seven from the BJD, four from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, one from the Shiromani Akali Dal, and one Independent, did not cast ballots, according to ANI. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar abruptly resigned on July 21, which made the election necessary. Radhakrishnan resigned as Maharashtra Governor on Thursday after being elected Vice President. According to an official statement, President Murmu has given Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat additional responsibility over Maharashtra until further directives.
A number of political figures traveled to New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony. They were Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav, Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Karnataka governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, and Jharkhand governor Santosh Gangwar.
CP Radhakrishnan was born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, on May 4, 1957, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In 1974, he joined the Bharatiya Janasangh’s state executive committee after starting his political career as an RSS Swayamsevak. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore in 1998 after serving as the BJP’s secretary in Tamil Nadu in 1996. He was re-elected in 1999.
