A biopic on Virat Kohli has long been a dream for many cricket fans, but filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has made it clear that he will not be the one to helm such a project. During promotions for his upcoming drama Nishaanchi, Kashyap was asked if he would consider directing a film on India’s cricketing icon. In response, he firmly ruled it out. He explained that since Kohli is already a hero for millions, he would rather focus on more difficult, less obvious subjects.
Speaking in a candid interview with Filmygyan, Kashyap said that he wouldn’t choose to direct Kohli’s cinematic journey, though he holds the cricketer in high regard. He described Kohli as “a very beautiful man, authentic and emotional, an incredible person,” adding that he knows him personally.
Instead of entertaining the idea of a cricketing biopic, Kashyap is channeling his energy into Nishaanchi. Set in Uttar Pradesh in the early 2000s, the film features Aaishvary Thackeray in his acting debut, playing twin brothers Babloo and Dabloo, whose clashing ideologies form the core of the story.
The filmmaker hinted that Nishaanchi may remind audiences of his cult hit Gangs of Wasseypur but stressed that it carries its own identity. He revealed that the project was partly designed to move away from persistent questions about Gangs of Wasseypur 3. Describing the theme, Kashyap said the film is “influenced by Crime and Punishment,” and reaffirmed his belief that crime in his stories always carries consequences, with no character escaping scot-free.
