IndiGo to expand fleet with purchase of 30 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft

IndiGo doubled its order of wide-body aircraft to 60 on Friday when it announced that it had signed a deal with Airbus to purchase an extra 30 A350-900 aircraft. The domestic carrier will join the ranks of wide-body aircraft with the new order. The largest airline in the nation, which has been growing its global network, now has the opportunity to buy an additional 40 A350 family aircraft.

“India’s top airline, IndiGo, said today that 30 of its 70 Airbus A350-900 purchase rights will be converted into firm orders by signing a contract with Airbus. IndiGo stated in a statement that this doubles the number of wide-body aircraft it has ordered from 30 to 60 Airbus A350-900s.”

The action is consistent with the airline’s long-haul service expansion and attempts to draw in more international passengers from Gulf carriers like Emirates. In June 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the extra 30 aircraft was already signed by IndiGo and Airbus. In April 2024, the airline company placed its first order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft. By the end of 2030, it wants to increase its overall capacity and broaden its global network.

“For future needs, the airline also kept the right to buy an extra 70 Airbus A350 Family aircraft, of which 30 are now being used. IndiGo departed with the buy rights for 40 further wide-body aircraft after turning 30 of those purchase rights into firm orders,” the statement continued.

According to the business, Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB engine, which is renowned for its dependability and fuel efficiency, will power the A350-900 aircraft. It added that IndiGo will have more operational flexibility and strategic options thanks to the mission capability of these aircraft and the Trent XWB engines’ performance. With a fleet of over 400 aircraft, IndiGo holds a 60% market share in the nation’s domestic aviation industry. More than 900 aircraft, including the A320NEO, A321NEO, and A321XLR, have also been ordered by it.
