148 athletes, mostly Olympic-bound, across sports get COVID-19 vaccine first dose

There are 163 athletes (including para-athletes) who have received at least their first dosage of the COVID-19 vaccine as of May 20.

According to the Indian Olympic Association, 148 competitors from all sports, including those who have qualified for the forthcoming Tokyo Games, have already got their first dose of COVID-19 immunization (IOA).

According to IOA president Narinder Batra, 17 of the 148 athletes have gotten both dosages and 131 have gotten their first jab. These 148 include possible Olympians who might compete in the Tokyo Olympics, which begin on July 23.

Aside from that, 13 Tokyo Paralympic participants have gotten their first vaccine shot, with two receiving both doses. The Paralympics in Tokyo begin on August 24. There are 163 athletes (including para-athletes) who have received at least their first dosage as of May 20. As per Batra, the vaccination status of Tokyo-bound Indian athletes and officials on the long list as of May 20, 87 officials have received a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 23 have been completely vaccinated.

More than 90 Indian athletes have qualified so far for the Tokyo Olympics, which were postponed from last year owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Olympic-bound shooters who are presently practicing in Croatia will get vaccinated there since they will travel directly to Tokyo from there, according to the NRAI.

Some of them had their initial vaccinations in India before traveling to Croatia, and they will receive their second dosage there. Fencer Bhavani Devi had her first injection at her training camp in Italy, while weightlifter Mirabai Chanu is scheduled to receive her injections in the United States.
