Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray to meet PM Modi today

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi today to discuss Maratha reservation.

Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray will be meeting PM Modi today, June 8, in Delhi. Uddhav Thackeray will be discussing the issue of the Maharashtra reservation with the PM. He arrived in Delhi today morning and will be meeting PM at 11 am. After the meet, Thackeray will address the media for some big policies.

ANI had stated that CM Thackeray had written to PM Modi last month to take steps to declare the Maratha community in Maharashtra as Socially and Educationally Backward (SEBC). This will enable them to claim the reservation in education and public employment. Uddhav Thackeray is seeking a reservation quota of around 12% to 13% in education and public employment respectively.

The CM had written that judgement delivered by the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on May 5, 2021, has urged him to write to PM Narendra Modi for requesting appropriate steps to grant reservation to the Maratha community from the State of Maharashtra. In accordance with the law, to the minimum extent of 12% in Education and 13% in Public Employment.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of India had stricken down the reservation for Maratha Community reasoning that the reservation ceiling exceeds the 50% mark. The judgement said that there was no valid ground to breach 50% reservation while granting the Maratha reservation in Maharashtra.
