Retired IAS officer, Anup Chandra Pandey appointed as an election commissioner

On Tuesday, Union government appointed Anup Chandra Pandey as an Election Commissioner. He is a retired IAS officer of the 1984 batch, Uttar Pradesh Cadre. Along with him, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra and Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar are the members on the panel.

According to a notification published in ‘The Gazette of India’ dated June 8 stated, “In pursuance of clause (2) of article 324 of the constitution, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Anup Chandra Pandey, IAS (Retd.) (UP: 1984) as the Election Commissioner with the effect from the date he assumes the office.”

Anup Chandra Pandey has been appointed to the vacant position left by Election Commissioner Sunil Arora who retired on April 12. His appointment rebuilds the three member commission to its full strength. These three members are now set to administer the next crucial assembly election in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur, and Uttarakhand in the coming years.

During his civil services, Anup Chandra Pandey had served as the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He was also an Infrastructural and Industrial Development Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh. He retired from the civil services in August 2019.

On Educational front, Anup Chandra Pandey has a BTech degree in Mechanical Engineering, an MBA degree and a doctorate in Ancient History.

In the election commission, he will have a litter under three year in office. He is expected to retire in February 2024.
