Building in Malad collapses on another claiming 11 lives including 8 children

A double-storey residential building collapsed on another structure, claiming eleven lives including eight children and leaving seven injured at a slum in Mumbai’s Malad last night.

As said by the officials, the evacuation process is still underway as many are feared to be trapped under the debris. People residing in another three-storey structure nearby are being evacuated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which is a Mumbai civic body, as the structure is observed to be in dilapidated condition as per the officials.

The injured were rescued and transported to a hospital in suburban Kandivali with the help of locals who joined the search team. While speaking to NDTV, a doctor from the hospital said that around 18 injuries including eleven dead were brought to the BDBA hospital premises.

According to Maharashtra Minister Aslam Shaikh, the buildings have collapsed due to heavy rains and the debris of the collapsed structures are being removed to see if more people are stuck underneath them.

The incident took place around 11:10 pm yesterday as said by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation disaster management cell. To carry out rescue operations, the local police and fire brigade officials have arrived at the spot.

While the deaths in the incident were termed as ‘murder’ due to negligence as tweeted by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Ram Kadam.
