West Bengal Government eases COVID-19 restrictions

On Monday, the West Bengal administration allowed government and private offices to function with 25 per cent workforce from June 16, easing some of the restrictions imposed to check the spread of COVID-19 as the situation has improved now, a top official said.

Chief Secretary, HK Dwivedi said that employers have to arrange for transporting employees as restrictions on the public transportation services will continue till further orders. Shopping malls will be allowed to operate from 11am to 6pm while markets can remain open between 7am and 11am from Wednesday.

Dwivedi said that the restaurant and bars will be allowed to open from noon to 8pm with 50 per cent of the seating capacity. Sports events can be organised inside stadiums with no spectators while parks will be open in the morning only for walkers who are fully vaccinated, said Dwivedi. The Chief Secretary said that the movie shooting for indoor and outdoors can be resumes with only 50 per cent of people who have to be vaccinated.

The government of West Bengal had imposed certain restrictions in the state from May 16 to May 30 and later extended it to June 15 to combat a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state. Meanwhile, the total number of cases are 14.6 lakhs, and 14.3 lakhs have recovered whereas the number of deaths occurred due to COVID-19 in West Bengal is 16,896.
