6 Maoists killed in exchange of fire with Greyhounds in forests of Visakhapatnam

Six known members of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) were killed during an exchange of fire between them and the Greyhound forces of Andhra Pradesh Police in Visakhapatnam earlier today. The CPI  under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has come to be known as a designated terrorist organization since 2009.

The exchange of fire took place at the Theegalametta forest area. This occurred when the Greyhounds who are specially trained for anti-Maoist operations such as this one, were in the process of conducting combing operations.

In an officially released statement by the district police department in Visakhapatnam, they have mentioned that six bodies of Maoists were recovered. Along with the bodies they also found an AK-47 rifle, an SLR (self-loading rifle), a carbine, three 303 rifles and a country-made weapon.

Mr. Venkataramana, who is the Koyyuru inspector of police mentioned that the specific details of the killed and wounded Maoists are not yet apprehended since the encounter spot was in the thick of the forest and that the search procedures were ongoing and additional police forces are being sent to the area for in detail investigation.

There have been rumours from unconfirmed reports that a top Maoist leader escaped during the counterfire and that police are now using helicopters to track them.
