SII to begin trails of Novavax vaccine for children in July

Pune-based vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII) is expected to begin clinical trials for the Novavax Covid vaccine for children in the month of July.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) Serum Institute India might launch Novavax is predicted to start clinical trials of the Novavax vaccine for youngsters in July of this year. This may be the fourth COVID-19 vaccine to undergo a clinical test for youngsters in India.

Novavax a biotechnology company developing next-generation vaccines for serious infectious diseases, has  announced that NVX-CoV2373, its protein-based COVID-19 vaccine candidate, that has met the primary endpoint, with a vaccine efficacy of 89.3%, in its Phase 3 clinical trial conducted in the United Kingdom. The study  has assessed efficacy during a period within the high transmission and with a new UK variant strain of the virus emerging and circulating widely. It is conducted in partnership with the UK government’s Vaccines.

Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech has already started clinical trials of Covaxin for youngsters 12 to 18 years aged . A complete of 525 children are a part of these trials being conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and Patna. Clinical trials for Covaxin also will be conducted for youngsters within the 6-12 age bracket followed by the 2-6 age bracket. Novavax vaccine shows 90.4% effectiveness against COVID-19 . Vaccine maker Bharat Biotech is additionally conducting clinical trials of its nasal COVID-19 vaccine for youngsters .

Zydus Cadila has also begun the trials of its COVID-19 vaccine, ZyCoV-D, in children aged 12-18. The pharma company now plans to conduct clinical trials for its vaccine in children within the 5-12 age bracket .Trials for the Pfizer vaccine are underway within the UK for youngsters aged 12-15, a similar vaccine has been approved in Canada for youngsters. Meanwhile, vaccinations of youngsters within the 16-18 age bracket have already begun in France and Hungary.

The Government of India has launched a nationwide vaccination drive against COVID-19 on January 16 of this year and completed 26.55 crore doses of the approved vaccines is been administered across the country.

In the first phase of the vaccination drive, only healthcare and frontline workers were eligible to receive the jab. The vaccines were made available for those aged 60 or above within the second phase of the vaccination drive starting March 1. Vaccinations were also permitted for those within the 45-60 age bracket with comorbidities during this phase.
