According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the north-eastern states of Assam, Manipur and Meghalaya were hit by low-intensity earthquakes early on June 18. Assam’s Sonitpur district, Manipur’s Chandel and Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills have recorded magnitude 4.1, 3.0 and 2.6 earthquakes respectively.

The earthquake occurred at 2:04 am at a depth of 22 kms. The epicentre was located at 36 kms. West-Northwest (WNW) of Tezpur. Within three days, a second earthquake has hit Sonitpur district’s Tezpur. It had recorded a 3.0 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday night. It occurred around 10:53 pm at a depth of 10 kms with the epicentre located at 60 kms west of Tezpur.
Manipur’s Chandel area earthquake has been classified as ‘rather strong’ at a depth of 10 kms. It occurred at 1:06 am with the epicentre being 39 kms East-Southeast (ESE) of Moirang, Manipur.

Additionally, an earthquake of 2.6 magnitude hit the West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya at 4:20 am at a depth of 10 kms. The epicentre was located 58 kms. West-Southwest (WSW) of Nangpoh.
On June 18, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued guidelines on how to stay safe during an earthquake. People should stay away from furniture, lamps and windows when they are indoors. If outside, they should stay away from buildings, power polls and walls but if they are in an open space, they should stay in the place till the shaking stops and leave buildings, exterior walls and heavy objects.
