Aamir Khan on the 20th anniversary on his Oscar winning production, Lagaan recalls financial struggles and father’s bankrupt state amidst an enormous financial debt.

On the 20th anniversary of Aamir Khan’s Oscar winning production, Laagan, the actor-producer reveals the financial difficulties faced by his father, Tahir Hussain who was nearly bankrupt once upon a time.

In an interview, Aamir said that he never thought he could become a producer, but ended up producing one of the biggest films in Indian Cinema, Lagaan.

In a media interaction, Aamir said, “I come from a film family, I’ve seen my uncle make movies, I’ve seen my father making movies. My father was a very enthusiastic producer, a good producer. But he didn’t know how to do business, so he never made any money. And he only had problems. One film took eight years to make, another took three years.”

Elaborating on his past financial difficulties, Aamir recalled an incident of how his father was scavenging the house for his graduation marksheet, because he would soon need it to find himself a job. “A man in his 40s is telling his wife that he’s looking for his graduation certificate, that was our situation,” Aamir said.

The actor’s father ended up producing Laagan “by accident” because he couldn’t find anyone else for the job. He intended for Lagaan to be his last production, However things turned out for the better and the production of films continued unabatedly.
