Team India lost their first match in the AFC Asian Cup against Australia on Saturday at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Doha, Qatar, as the Socceroos won 2-0.
Australia secured a win when Jordan Bos doubled Australia’s advantage in the 72nd minute of play after Jackson Irvine opened the scoring in the 50th.
Sunil Chhetri had the best opportunity of the match to open the scoring in the first half with a header off the target in the first 20 minutes.
Australia dominated the first half, although India appeared to have maintained their lines properly. However, the resistance ended in the 50th minute, when Irvine scored with a left-footed half-volley inside the area after Gurpreet Singh Sandhu intercepted the ball into his path.
The Australians scored a second goal through substitute Bos, who scored with his first touch after coming off the bench. A couple of minutes later, the 21-year-old attacker nearly doubled his score, but his left-footed effort went wide.
In their second AFC Asian Cup match, India will take on Uzbekistan on January 18 in the hopes of turning around their fortunes. On January 23, they will play Syria in the last group stage match as they try to secure progress despite their early defeat.
