Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly pulled from Netflix over Ilaiyaraaja copyright row

On April 10, 2025, Adhik Ravichandran’s film Good Bad Ugly, starring Ajith Kumar, hit theatres. After the huge box office success, the movie started to stream on Netflix, however it has since been taken down due to Ilaiyaraaja’s copyright infringement lawsuit.

Netflix, the over-the-top streaming service, took the popular movie Good Bad Ugly down from its service on September 17, 2025. Due to copyright violations, the movie was removed off the internet after four months of availability.

The removal was carried out in response to a court ruling that prohibited the producers from showing the movie in any form due to the maestro’s three songs being used without permission. The filmmakers were sued by the composer for improperly utilising his songs, Ottha Ruba Tharen, En Jodi Manja Kuruvi, and Ilamai Idho Idho.

Producers Mythri Movie Makers received a legal warning from Ilaiyaraaja earlier in April for exploiting the music without his permission. Additionally, the composer sought Rs 5 crore in compensation. But according to a Hindustan Times story, Yalamanchili Ravi Shankar of Mythri Movie Makers had previously claimed that they had obtained the rights from the appropriate record companies and complied with all relevant procedures.

“We have obtained permission from all the music labels necessary for the songs we used in the film,” the producer stated. We have taken NOCs from the labels in accordance with protocol because they own the rights. We followed the book exactly.

Ajith Kumar played the protagonist in Good Bad Ugly, which told the tale of AK (Red Dragon), a former gangster serving a life sentence in jail, who seeks atonement for his violent past in order to provide a better future for his kid. But when his kid is falsely accused, AK is forced to revert to his previous behaviour, and mayhem results.

In addition to Karthikeya Dev, Priya Prakash Varrier, Sunil, Jackie Shroff, Shine Tom Chacko, and many more in important parts, the film starred Trisha Krishnan and Arjun Das as co-leads.
