Amitabh Bachchan Reflects on Aging and the Challenges of Acting in the Modern Film Industry

In a candid blog post last night, Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan shared his thoughts on the challenges of aging and adapting to the evolving film industry. The 82 year old actor discussed his concerns about whether he can still “do justice” to the roles he is offered, expressing that his experience on set is now marked by uncertainty and adaptation.

Bachchan admitted that he often feels like a “mere puppet,” as he follows the direction of the filmmakers, without being fully aware of the intricacies behind the production, marketing, and exhibition processes. “Meetings abound for work to come, and this makes it a test, a challenge… what to take, what to refute, what to politely refuse,” he wrote, adding that he remains detached from the business side of filmmaking.

Despite the obstacles of age, Bachchan emphasized his commitment to improvisation on set, stating that his creativity comes spontaneously, without prior preparation or research. He also acknowledged that as he grows older, memorizing lines is no longer the only challenge; “multiple age-related contingencies” now play a significant role in his ability to deliver on screen.

Bachchan concluded by reflecting on the mistakes he often notices after a day’s shoot, and how he sometimes calls directors in the middle of the night for a chance to improve his performance. With over six decades in the industry, Bachchan’s passion for his craft continues, even as the hurdles of age and changing times take their toll.
