At the age of 61, actor Andre Braugher, who won an Emmy for his roles on the television shows Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn 99, passed away on Monday. Jennifer Allen, Braugher’s publicist, informed The Associated Press that the actor died after a short illness.
Glory (1989), featuring Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman (who won an Oscar for the movie about an all-Black army regiment during the Civil War), gave the Chicago-born actor his big break.
Despite the role, he told The Associated Press in 2019 that it was difficult for him to find work in Hollywood where roles for African American actors were “few and far between.” Period.”
However, he would make a name for himself as Det. Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, a gritty police drama on NBC based on a novel by David Simon, who would go on to create The Wire.
Braugher was best known for his role as Captain Raymond Holt in the comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” from 2013 to 2021.
Braugher got two Emmy nominations and won both. Andre Braugher won a lead actor Emmy for his portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton on NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street” in 1998, during his last year on the series.
